How to become a pharmacist
Becoming a pharmacist in the UK has no shortcut — it is a regulated profession. You must complete an accredited Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) degree, a year of pre-registration training and the registration assessment, then register with the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC). Only registered pharmacists may practise.
1. Master of Pharmacy degree
The accredited MPharm degree at a UK university is the required route. Students cover chemistry, physiology, pharmacology and pharmacy practice and complete placements. The degree is followed by a foundation training year and the GPhC registration assessment — without these you cannot register or practise as a pharmacist.
2. Pharmacy technician route
If you want to enter pharmacy sooner, training as a pharmacy technician — often via a Level 3 apprenticeship and registration with the GPhC — lets you work in dispensing and patient support. It is a respected career, but it does not qualify you as a pharmacist; that still requires the MPharm.
3. Pre-registration training
The pre-registration (foundation) training year is the practical, paid part of qualifying. Working in a community or hospital pharmacy under a tutor, you apply your degree knowledge before sitting the GPhC assessment. It is an essential stage of qualifying, not an alternative to the degree.
There is no fast track: the route is an MPharm degree, the foundation training year, the GPhC registration assessment and then registration. If you want to work in a pharmacy sooner, you can start as a dispensing or pharmacy technician — a valuable role in its own right, but not a substitute for the pharmacist qualification.
