How to become a archaeologist

Archaeology is an academic discipline, and in the UK the professional route almost always starts with a degree in archaeology or a related subject. You can, and should, gain practical experience earlier — volunteering or working on excavations during your studies. Many commercial roles also expect membership of the Chartered Institute for Archaeologists (CIfA).

1. University degree

A degree in archaeology or history — often through to master's level — is the main route into the profession. Courses combine theory, work with artefacts and compulsory fieldwork on excavations.

2. Field excavations

Excavations and community digs take on volunteers and field assistants every year. It's the fastest way to gain real field experience in recording finds and working on site — often open to students or beginners without a degree.

3. Specialist and postgraduate study

Postgraduate study and work in research institutions and museums let you specialise (by period, region or material) and lead your own projects. Professional accreditation through CIfA is valued for commercial and senior fieldwork roles.

4. Related skills

Skills in related tools — GIS, photogrammetry, surveying and lab analysis of materials — raise your value and open the way into specialist teams, even without a conventional academic career.

The quickest way to get a foot in the door is to join an excavation as a volunteer or field assistant while you study for a degree.
