Many of the routine steps — setting the kiln temperature, monitoring the burn curve, logging how much fuel or clay is used — will increasingly be handled by automated controllers and sensors. What still needs a person is judging whether the fired pieces have the right color, texture, or strength, and deciding when to tweak the schedule or fix a glitch in the furnace. You'll also spend time doing the hands‑on prep work — loading the kiln, checking seals, cleaning burners — and keeping the equipment in good shape, which isn’t easy to fully automate. Work schedule and conditions

The furnace operator usually works 8-10 hours a day. The weekends are on Saturdays and Sundays. This is mostly a factory job. Remote work is not possible. Hazardous working conditions may apply. Personal protective equipment is used.

How to become a burner

You can become a furnace/heat-treatment operator (burner) in the UK without a degree. What matters is understanding heat-treatment technology, controlling furnace temperature cycles and following safety rules. To work independently you'll usually complete the employer's competency and safety training, and gain a recognised vocational qualification.

1. Specialised courses

Short courses, from a few weeks to a few months, give the basics of furnace operation, temperature cycles and quality control of the firing process. This is the quickest way into the job.

2. FE college / vocational study

An FE college or vocational course in the relevant field gives systematic training and a recognised qualification. Study can run up to a year and gives a stronger technical grounding.

3. On-the-job training

Many plants take on trainees with no experience and train you on the production line under experienced staff, with a recognised qualification arranged as you progress.

The fastest route is a specialist course or on-the-job training leading to a recognised vocational qualification. Skill in heat treatment grows with hands-on experience.
