How to become a bacteriologist

You can't get into bacteriology in the UK without a degree: this scientific work with microorganisms and infections needs a qualification in microbiology, biology or a related science — there's no shortcut. The fastest realistic route is a relevant degree with early laboratory experience. Working in NHS clinical diagnostics additionally requires HCPC registration as a biomedical scientist.

1. Degree (the main route)

A bachelor's, often followed by a master's, in microbiology or biology is the essential foundation of the profession, giving you both theory and laboratory skills. For NHS clinical diagnostic work you'll need an accredited biomedical science degree and HCPC registration.

2. Courses and CPD (a supplement)

Short courses and certificates are useful for mastering particular techniques or new equipment, but on their own they don't give access to a bacteriologist post — they only supplement the underlying degree.

3. Laboratory placements and internships

Placements and internships in research or diagnostic laboratories are the best way to gain experience alongside your studies. It's worth starting them while you're still studying so you can move to independent work sooner.

There is no way round the education here. You can speed up your start with early lab experience or a placement during your studies, so you gain hands-on work with cultures and equipment before you graduate. After that, your expertise grows with practice in research and diagnostic laboratories, and clinical roles require HCPC registration.
