How to become a tin smith

You don't need a degree to become a sheet metal worker — it's a trade best entered through an apprenticeship or on-the-job training. An FE college can offer a fabrication and welding course (such as a BTEC or NVQ) combining theory with hands-on practice on the machines, ending in a recognised qualification. A good option for building depth.

3. Learning on the job

With no experience you can start as a trainee or labourer in a metalwork shop or fabrication firm. It's a great way to learn directly from experienced workers while earning and gaining real experience.

The fastest route is an apprenticeship or learning as a trainee in a workshop, alongside a college course where useful. For welding, gain the appropriate welder coding; for site work, get a CSCS card. Your skill grows with practice.
