Software will start handling the routine logging of temperatures and ingredient amounts, plus the basic trend charts you used to update by hand. You'll still need to be on site to feel when a valve is sticking, to lift and clear lines, and to decide when a batch is off and needs dumping or rework. Most days you'll spend less time writing things down and more time walking the floor, tightening fittings, and trusting your nose when the readout looks fine but the steam smells wrong.

How to become a boiler operator
You can become a boiler operator in the UK without a degree. What matters is understanding how boiler plant works, controlling pressure and temperature, and following safety rules. To work independently you'll need relevant operating tickets and a Boiler Operation Accreditation Scheme (BOAS) qualification for steam plant.
1. Boiler operator courses
Short specialist courses, from a few weeks to a few months, cover boiler operation, heat processes and safety, and prepare you for the BOAS assessment. This is the quickest way into the job.
2. FE college / vocational study
An FE college course in heating, plant or building services gives systematic training and a recognised qualification. It takes longer but gives a stronger technical foundation.
3. On-the-job training
Many boiler houses take on trainees with no experience and train you on site under an experienced operator, with operating tickets and accreditation arranged as you go.
The fastest route is a boiler operator course followed by the relevant operating tickets and BOAS accreditation. From there your skill grows with experience running boiler plant.
