You can become a driller quickly — no degree is needed. What matters is learning to work a drilling machine, read drawings, and follow safety rules. The basic skills are picked up on the job or on a short course.
1. Short courses
The quickest route. Short machine-operator courses give the basics of working drilling equipment, choosing tooling, and checking quality in a few weeks.
2. College or vocational training
A vocational engineering course at an FE college, or a BTEC/NVQ in machining, leads to a recognised qualification that is valued in industry and improves pay.
3. Apprenticeship on the job
Many firms take on apprentices with no experience and train them on the shop floor under an experienced machinist. You quickly build practical skill and gain a recognised grade through your work.
The fastest route is an apprenticeship in industry or a short machine-operator course. On a worksite a recognised competence card (such as a CSCS card for construction) is often expected. Skill and higher grades grow with experience.
