How to become a drone operator

You can become a drone operator in the UK without a degree — practical flying skill and knowing the rules matter most. For most commercial or larger drones you'll register with the CAA (getting an Operator ID and a Flyer ID) and, depending on the drone and where you fly, gain an A2 Certificate of Competency or a General VLOS Certificate (GVC). The fastest route is a short pilot course with hands-on flights.

1. Short drone-piloting course (A2 CofC / GVC)

The fastest route is a CAA-recognised training course that prepares you for the A2 Certificate of Competency or the General VLOS Certificate (GVC), covering drone handling, maintenance and flight safety. These run from a few days to a few weeks and combine theory with supervised flying so you can take on real jobs.

2. On-the-job training with no experience

Some firms take on beginners and train them on the spot. You learn the basics of flying in real conditions — aerial photography, surveys or monitoring — under experienced pilots, without needing to complete a full course first (though commercial work still requires the right CAA registration).

3. Advanced technical programme

Technical colleges and advanced programmes cover the more complex side of drone work — equipment setup, automated mission planning and analysing captured data. This is the longest route and suits people aiming to work with complex systems or surveying.
