1. Apprenticeship

An apprenticeship with an established smithy is the fastest route in — you earn while you learn, working hot metal at the forge under an experienced blacksmith and building real skill from day one, even with no prior experience.

2. College course

An FE college or vocational provider can teach the basics in a few weeks to a few months: working the forge, handling tools, and core forging techniques. Many programmes blend theory with hands-on workshop practice.

3. Vocational training

A longer blacksmithing or metalwork course at a vocational training provider gives more thorough grounding in forging and metalworking techniques. It's a slower path but builds a broader, more systematic skill base.

The quickest way in is to find an apprenticeship or work-based training with an established blacksmith and learn on the job. A short college course can add the basics of metalwork and forge technique, then your skill and range grow with experience.
