How to become a generator technician
You don't need a degree to become a generator technician — what matters is technical skill in servicing and repairing petrol and diesel generators. Because the work involves electrical installations, you'll need recognised electrical competence; an ECS card and the 18th Edition wiring regulations qualification are commonly expected.
1. Short technical courses
Short courses on electrical equipment and petrol/diesel generators run over a few weeks and cover diagnostics, replacing parts and safe working with electrical installations.
2. Apprenticeship or college course
An electrical or mechanical apprenticeship or college course (one to two years) leads to an NVQ Level 3 and a recognised qualification covering electrics, engines and electrical safety.
3. On-the-job training
You can start as an assistant and learn on site under an experienced engineer, working towards the electrical competence and ECS card needed to work independently.
