How to become a hydrologist

Becoming a hydrologist normally requires a degree — there's no real shortcut. You'll need a degree in hydrology, geography, environmental or earth science, or a related discipline, often followed by a master's. The best way to speed up entry is to gain placements and fieldwork while you study, and chartership (CSci or via professional bodies) strengthens later career progression.

A bachelor's or master's in hydrology, environmental science, geography or earth sciences is the standard and effectively required route. 2. Short courses (supporting roles)

3. Placements and graduate schemes

The quickest way to secure a hydrologist post is to gain placements, internships or a graduate scheme with an environmental consultancy, water company or a body such as the Environment Agency while studying. Supervised fieldwork builds practical skills and often leads straight to a job after graduation.
