Graduates and apprentices usually start as an assistant engineer and progress with experience.
1. Apprenticeship or college (HNC/BTEC)
The quickest legal route is a higher or degree apprenticeship, or an HNC/HND/BTEC in civil or building engineering at an FE college, taking roughly 1–3 years. You earn while you learn to read drawings, prepare estimates and follow standards. Apprentices and college leavers typically start as an assistant PTO engineer.
2. University degree
A degree in civil or structural engineering from a UK university gives deeper knowledge of structures, estimating and design documentation. It is a longer route (3–4 years) but opens the way to senior PTO and lead engineer roles.
