You can become a laboratory assistant in the UK without a degree — a science apprenticeship or a college course such as a BTEC or T-Level in applied science is usually enough. A laboratory technician apprenticeship is one of the most direct routes. A degree is needed mainly for research roles.

1. Laboratory technician apprenticeship

A laboratory technician apprenticeship lets you earn while you learn, training in lab methods, handling reagents and using equipment, and gaining a recognised qualification — one of the most direct UK routes in.

2. College course (BTEC / T-Level)

A BTEC or T-Level in applied science, or an Access to HE course, teaches lab techniques and sample analysis over 1–2 years and prepares you for a technician role.

3. Trainee role on the job

A trainee or assistant post in a lab gives real experience working with equipment and samples under supervision. Employers in many sectors train new starters on site.

4. University degree

A degree in biochemistry, microbiology or biomedical science is needed mainly for research and development roles. It is the longest route and not required for a standard lab assistant post.

The fastest route is a laboratory technician apprenticeship or a college science course followed by a trainee post. A degree in chemistry, biology or biomedical science is only essential for research careers.
