AI impact on sound engineer

Medium risk

AI replacement risk

Basic cleanup, leveling, and room-tone matching will increasingly be done by AI tools, so you'll spend less time on repetitive edits and noise reduction. What stays are the tasks that rely on ears and relationships: recording live takes, shaping effects to match a scene, and working with directors and musicians to get the right feel. Your day-to-day shifts toward setting up gear, making quick creative choices during sessions, and doing final passes where you decide what sounds right instead of just cleaning it up.

  • level balancing
  • basic editing and cleanup
Tasks that will remain human
  • live recording

How to become a sound engineer

You can become a sound engineer in the UK without a degree — what counts is practical skill with microphones, mixers and a DAW, plus a good ear. The fastest route is a short course or a college sound/music-production programme, then lots of hands-on practice. An apprenticeship or studio runner role lets you learn on the job.

1. Short courses

Short sound-engineering or music-production courses run from a few weeks to a few months and cover signal flow, microphones, mixing and DAWs (Pro Tools, Logic). This is the quickest way to build a working foundation and start gigging.

2. College or apprenticeship

A BTEC or T-Level in music technology at an FE college, or a sound/broadcast apprenticeship with an employer, gives deeper training and recognised credentials over one to two years while you build a portfolio.

3. Runner or studio internship

If you already have basic technical skills, start as a runner or intern at a recording studio, theatre, broadcaster or live-sound company. You learn on the job in a real team and progress to engineer as your reputation grows.

The fastest route is a short course plus time as a runner or on live sound, building a portfolio of recordings. No licence is required. Skill and reputation grow with experience and steady practice.
