Who is master adjuster

The setup technician plays an essential role in ensuring the uninterrupted operation of equipment. He carefully adjusts mechanisms, checks their functionality, and makes necessary corrections. Every day, the technician acts with great attention to detail, studies the characteristics of various components, and configures them to meet requirements. He also performs diagnostics, identifies malfunctions, and quickly resolves issues. When problems arise, he analyzes the situation, determines the cause, and develops effective solutions. He communicates with colleagues, shares experiences, and learns new technologies. Through his work, the setup technician ensures the stability of production processes and maintains a high level of productivity.

A lot of the routine monitoring and record‑keeping that master adjusters do — logging machine settings, filling out maintenance sheets, and running basic quality‑check reports — will increasingly be handled by sensors and software that flag anomalies automatically. What stays is the hands‑on work of setting up new equipment, fine‑tuning adjustments when a machine behaves oddly, and digging into tricky faults that don’t show up in the data. You’ll also still spend time training newcomers on safe procedures and adapting to unexpected breakdowns that require improvisation. Overall, expect fewer hours spent on paperwork and more time spent at the machine, using your judgment to keep the line running.

Tasks at risk of automation
  • logging machine settings
  • maintenance documentation
  • basic quality‑check reports
  • routine monitoring
Tasks that will remain human

How to become a master adjuster

You can become a machine setter and adjuster in the UK without a degree. A college course or an apprenticeship in engineering or mechatronics, plus hands-on practice, is enough. Where you work with electrical equipment you'll need the relevant 18th Edition wiring regulations knowledge and electrical safety training.

1. Short courses and on-the-job training

Focused courses in machine setting and maintenance build practical skills in a few weeks or months, combining theory with hands-on work on real equipment — the quickest way into the trade.

2. Engineering apprenticeship or college course

An apprenticeship or a college course (such as a BTEC or NVQ) in mechanical engineering, automation or electrical equipment takes longer but gives a deeper foundation, a recognised qualification and a clear skills grade.

3. Workplace training

Many employers take on adjusters without experience and train them in-house under experienced setters. You gradually master the tuning of production lines and raise your skill grade with experience.

The fastest route is a short setting and maintenance course or learning on the job alongside an experienced setter. Where required, obtain the appropriate electrical safety qualifications. Your skill grade rises with experience maintaining production lines.
