The software will start drafting policies, compiling compliance checklists, and crunching budget numbers, so you'll spend less time on paperwork and more time talking to staff and patients. What stays are the judgment calls: deciding how to handle a tricky staffing gap, calming an upset colleague, and choosing which medical protocol actually fits your hospital's situation. Your day becomes less about filling forms and more about walking the wards, listening to doctors, and making the final call when a guideline doesn't fit a real person.

How to become a chief doctor
Becoming a chief doctor (medical director) is the end of a long road, not an entry point — it always starts with qualifying as a doctor. In the UK that means a medical degree, GMC registration, foundation training and years of clinical practice, followed by senior and management experience. There is no shortcut around medical training.
1. Medical degree (essential)
The mandatory foundation: a medical degree, GMC registration and foundation training. Only after qualifying as a doctor and building clinical experience can you progress towards a chief doctor or medical director role.
2. Leadership courses
Courses in healthcare management and clinical leadership (such as NHS leadership programmes) are valuable for the management side, but they don't entitle you to the role without a medical qualification.
3. Experience on the job
Hands-on leadership is gained after you qualify — through senior clinical posts and management responsibility. You cannot intern into this role without first being a registered doctor.
The only route is to qualify and register as a doctor, gain extensive clinical experience, then add medical-leadership and management skills (for example NHS leadership programmes). Higher education is unavoidable here — it's the foundation everything else builds on.
