How to become a molder

You can become a moulder without a degree — this is hands-on work shaping and forming products from various materials. What matters is precision, knowledge of moulding technology and the ability to operate the equipment. Most skills are learned on the production floor.

1. On-the-job trainee role

The quickest way in is a trainee moulder post in production. Many manufacturers take people with no experience and train them on site in working with moulds, materials and quality control.

2. Specialist courses

Short courses in moulding or foundry/casting work give practical knowledge in a few weeks and help you gain clearance to start work on the production line sooner.

3. FE college or apprenticeship

A relevant manufacturing apprenticeship or FE college course gives you a trade qualification over 1–2 years. Useful for work on more complex production.

4. Self-study

Moulding technology and safety rules can be learned from industry materials, but this route only works as a supplement to hands-on practice on the production floor.

The fastest route is a trainee moulder post with on-the-job training. An apprenticeship or NVQ helps on more complex production, and your skill grows with experience.
