How to become a neurologist
Becoming a neurologist means there's no shortcut around training. You need a medical degree, full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC), the two-year Foundation Programme, and then specialty training in neurology. You can't practise as a neurologist without a medical qualification and a licence to practise.
1. Medical degree and GMC registration
The only route is a medical degree (typically five to six years) at a UK medical school, followed by provisional then full registration with the General Medical Council. This is the essential foundation — only after it can you progress towards specialist work.
2. Foundation and specialty training
After your degree you complete the two-year Foundation Programme, then core and higher specialty training in neurology, leading to the Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT). This structured training is what qualifies you as a consultant neurologist.
3. Continuing professional development
Throughout your career you keep your skills current through CPD, annual appraisal and revalidation with the GMC. This builds on your training and specialty experience rather than replacing the qualifications needed to enter the profession.
There's no short route: first a medical degree and GMC registration, then the Foundation Programme and specialty training in neurology, ending with a CCT. Expertise grows over years of clinical practice and ongoing professional development.
