How to become a extractor operator
You can become an extractor operator without a degree — it's a hands-on process role. The fastest route is on-the-job training with an employer or a college course in process operations; many start as a plant operative and gain qualifications while working. In a food plant you'll need a Level 2 Food Hygiene certificate, and you'll be trained in COSHH and safe handling of chemicals.
1. On-the-job training
The quickest way in is to join a processing or chemical plant as a trainee operative and learn the equipment alongside experienced staff. Employers provide the safety induction, COSHH and equipment training you need, often within a few months, and you can work towards an NVQ in process operations as you go.
2. College course or apprenticeship
An FE college course or a process industries apprenticeship (for example an NVQ Level 2 in Process Manufacturing or a Science Manufacturing technician apprenticeship) gives broader grounding in extraction, equipment set-up and safety. Apprenticeships pay you while you train and usually last one to two years.
3. Trainee role without experience
Many plants take on trainees with no prior experience and train them in-house. This is a paid, practical route: you learn extraction processes and quality control under supervision and build towards a recognised process operations qualification.
