How to become a pilot
To become a pilot, what matters is not a university degree but a pilot's licence issued through CAA-approved training. Private flying needs a Private Pilot Licence (PPL); flying for an airline needs a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) or Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL). Training combines ground exams with logged flying hours.
1. Flight school and pilot's licence
The direct route is training at a CAA-approved flight school to earn a pilot's licence. You start with a Private Pilot Licence (PPL), then build the required hours towards a Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL). It is the licence, not a degree, that gives you the right to fly.
2. Integrated airline training programmes
Integrated programmes (often called frozen-ATPL courses) combine ground school and flight training, taking you from zero to a commercial licence in a couple of years. This structured path is often the quickest for those aiming directly at an airline career.
3. Aviation degree
A degree in aviation or aeronautics is not required, but it can help during airline selection and gives a deeper grasp of the technical side of flight. On its own, though, it does not replace the pilot's licence you must still earn.
4. Building hours and experience
