How to become a plating operator

You can become a plating operator without a degree — it's a skilled production trade. What matters is running plating lines, preparing parts and handling electrolytes safely. Because you work with chemicals, you'll need health-and-safety (COSHH) training, and a medical may be required.

1. On-the-job training

The quickest entry is starting as a trainee on a plating line and learning the processes under an experienced operator, picking up safe-handling and chemical-awareness training on site. It's a practical route with no time away from work.

2. Apprenticeship

A surface-finishing or process-operations apprenticeship gives structured training in electroplating, chemistry basics and safety, plus a recognised qualification. It's a solid foundation for independent work on a plating line.

3. Short course

A short course in surface finishing, electroplating or chemical handling covers electrolytes, plating settings and safety. It's useful for a confident start or for moving across from a related trade.

4. Upskilling and assessment

With experience you can take further training and assessment for more advanced coatings and lines. Keeping COSHH and safety training up to date is a normal part of the job.
