How to become a Java programmer
You can become a Java programmer without a degree — real skills and a portfolio are what count. The fastest route is an intensive bootcamp or structured self-study (Java, OOP, Spring, SQL, Git) backed by personal projects. A computer science degree isn't required and no licences are needed.
1. Bootcamp or self-study
The quickest, cheapest start. Coding bootcamps or self-study over a few months teach core Java, object-oriented programming, databases (SQL), the Spring framework and Git. Cement the theory with your own projects on GitHub — the portfolio is what convinces employers.
2. Apprenticeship or trainee scheme
Many UK employers run software developer apprenticeships and graduate or junior trainee schemes with no commercial experience required. You're paid to learn on real tasks under a mentor, pick up team development quickly and often move into a junior role.
3. Computer science degree
A degree in computer science or software engineering gives a strong theoretical base — algorithms, data structures and maths — but it's the longest path at three years or more. It isn't required for Java work: employers look first at your skills and code.
