How to become a programmer

There are several routes into software development in the UK, and you do not need a degree. The fastest paths are a coding bootcamp, a digital apprenticeship or self-teaching with a strong portfolio — employers hire on demonstrable skill, a clean GitHub profile and shipped projects. Be confident in one language (Python, JavaScript, Java), Git and databases.

1. Coding bootcamp

Intensive 12-24 week programmes take a complete beginner to junior-developer level with structured learning, mentoring and a portfolio project. This is the quickest route when you can study full-time and pair the course with a serious project on GitHub.

2. Digital apprenticeship

A software developer apprenticeship (typically Level 4 or a Level 6 degree apprenticeship) combines paid on-the-job training with study, usually over 2-4 years, and ends with a recognised qualification and often a permanent role at the host employer.

3. Self-taught with portfolio

Learn from free resources (freeCodeCamp, The Odin Project, university MOOCs) and open-source contributions, building 3-5 polished projects on GitHub. The cheapest route — it rewards discipline and works best when you network at meetups and contribute to existing projects.

4. University degree

A 3-year Bachelor's (optionally followed by a Master's) in Computer Science or Software Engineering from a UK university. It is the longest route and not required to start, but it is strongest for roles needing algorithmic depth, research or chartered engineer status.

Whichever path you take, build a public portfolio early — open-source contributions, side projects and a clean GitHub profile usually speak louder than a degree in hiring decisions. The fastest way in is a bootcamp or self-study with a strong portfolio, then applying actively for junior roles.
