How to become a carpenter
Carpentry is a skilled trade with a strong apprenticeship tradition in the UK. The standard route is an apprenticeship (typically 2-3 years) combining college study with paid on-site work, leading to an NVQ/Diploma in carpentry and joinery. You'll need a CSCS card to work on most construction sites.
1. Apprenticeship
The standard UK route: a 2-3 year apprenticeship split between an FE college and an employer. You earn an apprentice wage from day one and finish with a recognised NVQ/Diploma in carpentry and joinery.
2. College course / adult retraining
Career changers can take a college course or Diploma in carpentry and joinery, often combined with work experience, building hands-on skills with tools and timber and leading to the same qualifications. Suitable both for starting out and for retraining as an adult.
3. Advanced skills and continuing development
After qualifying, further training and an NVQ Level 3 open up more complex work — bespoke joinery, finishing and restoration — and supervisory roles. This is the path to taking on your own contracts and higher earnings.
