How to become a researcher
Becoming a research scientist in the UK requires higher education — there is no shortcut. You normally need at least a relevant Master's degree, and for independent research and career progression a PhD. What matters most is research skill, analytical thinking and the ability to work with the scientific literature.
1. Relevant Master's degree
The essential, required first step is a degree (at least a Master's) in the relevant scientific field at a UK university. While studying, get involved in a department or lab to build your first research skills.
2. PhD / doctorate
For independent research and career progression you need a PhD. This is the longest but necessary route for research-scientist posts in universities, research institutes and the NHS or industry R&D.
3. Research projects and publications
Joining research projects, grants and conferences and publishing in peer-reviewed journals builds your portfolio and speeds up your progress. This complements a degree and a PhD rather than replacing them.
The most realistic route is a relevant degree (through to a Master's), getting involved in research while you study, then a PhD. Taking part in research projects and publishing speed up your start, but they cannot replace the degree itself.
