How to become a fundraiser

You can become a fundraiser in the UK without a specific degree — communication, persuasion and relationship-building skills matter most. An understanding of marketing and the ability to build long-term relationships with donors are valuable. No licence is required.

1. Short courses

Fundraising and communications courses lasting a few weeks give you the basics: donor-acquisition strategies, working with supporters, writing grant applications and the fundamentals of campaigns. A quick way into the profession without a degree.

2. Volunteering with charities

Volunteering with charities, community groups and student organisations (for example AIESEC) lets you try fundraising in practice — from collecting donations to engaging donors — and build a portfolio without formal study.

3. Internship without experience

Many charities and not-for-profits offer internships where you can learn everything you need without prior experience. This is a great way to gain practical skills and understand how fundraising works day to day.

The fastest route is an internship with a charity or community organisation, or a short fundraising course. Volunteering with charities and student organisations (for example AIESEC) also gives real, hands-on experience of raising money.
