Basic cleanup, leveling, and room-tone matching will increasingly be done by software, so you'll spend less time on repetitive edits and more on the finicky choices that shape how a scene feels. What stays are the hands-on parts: setting up mics and booms on set, catching wind or traffic problems before they ruin a take, and working with the director to decide which sound actually carries the moment. Your day-to-day will start to look like less time nudging waveforms and more time listening on set, swapping gear quickly, and making sure the mix still has texture and space.
Tasks at risk of automation
- routine cleanup and leveling
- room-tone matching
- repetitive edits
Tasks that will remain human

How to become a sound engineer
You can become a sound engineer without a degree. What matters is mastering recording, setting up equipment, and editing audio. The basics are picked up fastest on a sound-recording course and through constant practice with gear and audio software such as Pro Tools.
1. Short sound-recording course
Specialist sound-engineering and recording courses build the basics quickly: working with microphones, the mixing desk, setting up the signal chain and the fundamentals of mixing. It's the fastest way to learn the craft and start on simpler projects.
2. Work experience in a studio or team
The most valuable experience comes from working as an assistant in a recording studio, or with a live or production team. You learn in practice alongside experienced engineers and gradually take on work of your own.
3. Self-teaching and a portfolio
Many people learn the trade themselves: studying a DAW (such as Pro Tools), practising at home and building a portfolio. Finished work and demo recordings often matter more to an employer than a formal qualification.
The fastest route is a short sound-recording course plus hands-on experience in a studio, live or production team. A degree isn't essential. Learn professional DAWs (such as Pro Tools) and build a portfolio — skill grows with every project.
