How to become a stamping operator

You can become a stamping operator quickly — GCSEs and on-the-job training are usually enough, with no degree required. You learn to set up and run pressing and stamping machinery, mostly on the shop floor. A site induction and an in-date CSCS card are typically needed to work in a factory or on site.

1. Short courses

Short courses lasting from a few weeks to a few months cover the basics of operating stamping equipment and the relevant health and safety. A good option if you want to enter the trade quickly.

2. Apprenticeship or college course

An engineering operative apprenticeship or a BTEC/NVQ at an FE college runs a year or more and deepens your knowledge of metalwork and production processes, combining theory with practical machine time.

Many manufacturers take on trainees with no experience and train you on the line under experienced supervisors. You build practical skill and work towards higher NVQ levels as you go.
