How to become a tester
You can become a software tester (QA) quickly and without a degree in the UK. What matters most is understanding how software works, attention to detail, and the ability to describe defects clearly. Manual testing basics can realistically be learned in a few months through a course or bootcamp.
1. Short courses and bootcamps
Short courses or bootcamps in manual testing are the quickest start. In a few weeks to a few months you learn the basics — types of testing, working from requirements, writing bug reports and using issue trackers — enough to apply for your first junior role.
2. Internship or junior QA role
An internship or junior position at a tech company lets you learn on real projects under experienced engineers. Many product and outsourcing firms take people on with no experience and train them on site — a fast way into the profession.
3. A university degree
A degree in a technical or computing subject gives a deeper understanding of development and computer science, useful for moving into test automation. It is not required, though — most testers enter the field through courses and practice.
The fastest route is a short testing course or bootcamp plus an internship or junior QA role. From there, add automation (Python, SQL, testing tools) and an industry certificate such as ISTQB Foundation — these raise your value in the job market.
