How to become a test engineer

You can become a test engineer without a degree — employers care most about practical skills. You need the fundamentals of testing, test cases and bug-tracking tools, plus a basic grasp of SQL and APIs. The fastest route is a focused QA course or bootcamp; an ISTQB certificate is a useful plus but isn't required.

1. QA course or bootcamp

An intensive manual-QA course or bootcamp can take you from beginner to junior level in 2-4 months, covering test cases, bug reports, working with APIs and the basics of automation. It is the quickest way onto the market.

2. Internship without experience

Many software companies take on trainee testers with no experience and train them on the job. You build practical skills, a portfolio and your first references — and internships often turn into permanent roles.

3. University degree

A degree in computer science or software engineering gives a deeper understanding of algorithms and software architecture and helps you move towards test automation. It's the longest route and is not required to enter the profession.

The fastest start is a short QA course or an internship that trains you on the job; you can study for a degree alongside or later. An ISTQB certificate strengthens your CV but isn't a condition of getting hired. From there you grow with experience and a move into automation.
