How to become a tester

You can become a software tester in the UK without a degree — many companies value practical skills and a portfolio over an academic qualification. The fastest route is an online QA/testing course or a bootcamp, followed by a junior role. The ISTQB Foundation Level certificate is a widely recognised credential that strengthens your CV.

1. Online courses and bootcamps

Online QA courses and bootcamps teach the basics of manual testing, test design and tools such as Selenium, Postman and JIRA. They typically run two to four months, after which you can apply for Junior QA roles. The ISTQB Foundation Level certificate is a useful add-on.

2. Apprenticeship or junior placement

Many UK tech companies offer software testing apprenticeships or junior placements. You learn on the job, working on real tasks under an experienced tester, and earn while you train.

3. Self-study and portfolio
