How to become a turner

You can become a turner (lathe operator) in the UK without a degree — the key is operating a lathe, reading engineering drawings and controlling dimensions. The fastest route is a machining apprenticeship or a short course at an FE college, followed by experience on the shop floor, increasingly on CNC machines.

1. College course or NVQ

A Level 2 or 3 NVQ/Diploma in Machining or Engineering at an FE college covers metal cutting, reading drawings and operating manual and CNC lathes. Courses run one to three years and include workshop practice.

2. Short machining or CNC courses

The fastest option: short courses teach the basics of turning — setting up the lathe, choosing cutting tools, holding tolerances and working safely. This is a good foundation for starting as a trainee in a workshop.

3. Machining apprenticeship

An apprenticeship or trainee placement in an engineering firm lets you learn the trade on the job under a skilled machinist, earning while you train. This is the quickest way to gain real production experience.

4. Self-study and certification

You can build up theory on metal cutting, CAD/CAM and drawing interpretation yourself using textbooks and online courses. However, turning needs practice at the machine, so self-study only supplements hands-on work on real equipment.

The fastest route is a short machining course or an apprenticeship in an engineering firm, where you build production experience under supervision. A college NVQ gives a stronger foundation. Learning CNC lathes and CAD/CAM programming opens the door to higher earnings.
