How to become a developer

There are several routes into software development. The classic path is a degree in computer science or software engineering, but degrees are no longer the only option — degree apprenticeships, coding bootcamps and self-taught portfolios are widely accepted in the UK, especially when backed by a strong GitHub profile and shipped projects.

1. University degree

A three-year bachelor's (optionally followed by a master's) in computer science, software engineering or informatics. Strongest for roles requiring algorithmic depth, research, or progress towards chartered engineer status.

2. Degree apprenticeship

A software or digital degree apprenticeship combines classroom study with paid, on-the-job training over several years. You finish with a recognised qualification — often a full degree — real experience and, frequently, a job offer from the host employer.

3. Coding bootcamp

Intensive 12-24 week bootcamps take complete beginners to junior-developer level. They work best when you can study full-time and pair the course with a serious portfolio project, and they are one of the quickest routes in.

4. Self-taught with portfolio

Online learning (freeCodeCamp, The Odin Project, university MOOCs) plus open-source contributions and 3-5 polished projects on GitHub. The cheapest path; it needs discipline and works best when you network at meetups and contribute to existing open-source projects.

Whichever path you take, build a public portfolio early — open-source contributions, side projects and a clean GitHub profile usually speak louder than diplomas in hiring decisions. No licence is required; the job is decided by your ability to ship working code.
