On this profession page, you will learn:

Who is photographer

The photographer captures important moments in life. He finds the right angle, adjusts the lighting, and studies the details. To take a portrait, the photographer selects the background, composes the scene, and collaborates with the model, suggesting how to pose best. During shoots, he skillfully manages exposure, plays with light to convey the desired atmosphere. When working at events, the photographer reacts to changing situations, skillfully capturing emotions and interactions. After the shoots, the photographer processes the materials, selects the best shots, edits them, and prepares them for publication or exhibition. Through his work, he creates visual stories that stay in people's memories.

AI impact on photographer

Medium risk

AI replacement risk

50%

AI will take over much of the editing and processing — color correction, batch retouching, and basic exposure fixes — so you'll spend less time behind a screen tweaking sliders. What stays are the shoots themselves: reading the room, directing people, choosing angles, and solving problems when light or weather misbehaves. You'll still prep gear, meet clients to figure out what they actually want, and build a portfolio that proves you can catch moments that feel real. Day-to-day, you'll shoot more and edit less, letting software handle the repetitive polish while you focus on framing and timing.

How to become a photographer

You can become a photographer without a degree — what matters is technical skill and a strong portfolio of work. It's enough to master the camera, lighting and composition on a course and practise a lot. Formal study is useful, but employers and clients look first at your real work.

1. Short courses

Photography and camera courses run from a few weeks to a few months and cover working with the camera, lighting, composition and the basics of editing. It's the fastest way to gain core skills and start building a portfolio.

2. Studio placement

Many studios and production companies take on assistants without experience. Working alongside experienced colleagues, you learn the equipment and the workflow in practice — one of the most effective routes into the profession.

3. College or university course

A college or university course in photography, film or media gives deeper knowledge of equipment, lighting and composition over one to two years. It's a thorough but optional, and the longest, option.

The fastest route is a short camera or photography course plus a placement on a shoot or in a studio. Build a portfolio and learn editing software — it's practice and a showreel that open doors. Your skill grows with every shoot.
