How to become a welder
Welding is a certificate-driven trade: employers care about which welding processes (MMA, MIG/MAG, TIG) and which materials you are certified for, more than which school you attended. The standard route is a 2-3 year vocational program plus internationally recognised welding certificates (EN ISO 9606, EN 14732). For supervisory roles you typically need an EWE/IWE qualification.
1. Vocational training (apprenticeship)
The apprenticeship gives you the metal trade fundamentals (reading drawings, fitting, fabrication) on top of welding. 3-4 years, paid throughout, ends in a recognised metalworking certificate plus initial welding tickets.
2. Welding certificate courses (EN ISO 9606)
The most direct route for adults: 2-12 weeks at an accredited welding school per certificate, often paid for by the employer. Each certificate is process+material+thickness specific and must be renewed every 1-3 years.
3. Welding supervisor / engineer (IWE/IWS)
For roles overseeing welded structures or pressure vessels: an International Welding Specialist/Technologist/Engineer qualification (IWS/IWT/IWE), administered in the UK through The Welding Institute (TWI). Typically 6-12 months part-time on top of a metalworking or engineering background.
Stack the certificates strategically: a TIG ticket on stainless and aluminium pays much more than the standard MIG/MAG on carbon steel, and certificates can be earned in a few weeks once you have the technique. Plan to recertify every 1-3 years to keep them valid.
