How to become a air traffic controller

Air traffic control is tightly regulated: you can only work after approved training and gaining a controller's licence from the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA). A medical certificate and strong aviation English (to the required ICAO level) are also mandatory. Without certification you cannot work.

1. Approved air traffic controller training

The main route is an approved ATCO training programme — in the UK, NATS runs the principal trainee scheme — built to CAA/ICAO standards. It combines theory with intensive simulator work, exams and a licence. This is the most direct path into the profession.

2. On-the-job training at an airport or control centre

Supervised on-the-job training at an airport or area control centre is a mandatory part of licensing. Only after completing this validation under an instructor are you cleared to control traffic independently.

3. Degree in aviation or transport engineering

A degree in aviation, transport engineering or physics can give a deeper theoretical base and may help in selection. It is a longer route of several years and does not replace the mandatory controller training and licence.

There is no quick bypass: the basis is approved controller training, a CAA licence, a medical certificate and aviation English. In the UK, NATS runs the main trainee scheme. After the course, supervised on-the-job training at a unit is required before you can work unsupervised.
