How to become a canner

You can become a canner without a degree — the work is learned on the job or through short courses. Because it involves food, you'll need a Level 2 Food Hygiene (Food Safety) certificate. The rest of the skill comes with practice on the production line.

1. On-the-job training

The fastest way in is to start as a trainee operative at a cannery or food plant and learn preparation, filling and sterilising under experienced staff. No prior experience is needed, but you'll need a Level 2 Food Hygiene certificate.

2. Short courses

Short food-processing courses cover the basics of preparation, filling, sterilising and food-safety rules in a few weeks. They're a convenient way to get ready for a production role and to gain your Food Hygiene certificate.

3. Apprenticeship or college course

A food-manufacturing apprenticeship or an FE college course in food technology gives deeper training and a recognised qualification. It takes longer but opens up wider opportunities and more senior roles on the production floor.

The fastest route is a trainee role on a food-production line, learning as you go — and make sure you get your Level 2 Food Hygiene certificate. Short courses or a college programme add further preparation, and your skill grows with experience.
