How to become a electrician
Electrician is a regulated trade in the UK, so the route runs through accredited vocational training rather than a degree. The standard path is an apprenticeship combining college theory with paid on-the-job training, typically 3–4 years, leading to an NVQ Level 3 and the 18th Edition Wiring Regulations. You'll need an ECS card to work on site and must be competent to current BS 7671 standards.
1. Apprenticeship
The standard route in the UK: an installation or maintenance electrician apprenticeship split between an FE college and a sponsoring employer over 3–4 years. You earn a wage from day one and finish with an NVQ Level 3, the 18th Edition qualification and the ECS card needed to work on installations.
2. Adult retraining route
For career changers: fast-track courses through colleges or training providers that recognise prior experience, often leading to the NVQ Level 3 via on-site assessment (the "experienced worker" route). It ends with the same recognised qualification and ECS card as the apprenticeship.
3. Higher technical education
Useful for moving from installation work into design, building services engineering or running your own electrical contracting business. An HNC/HND or degree adds 1–3 years on top of the trade qualification and unlocks engineering and supervisory roles.
