How to become a filling and pouring operator
You can become a filling and pouring operator quickly — no degree is needed, and most people learn on the job. The work is dispensing liquids into containers accurately and following safety procedures. If you'll be handling food or drink, you'll need a Level 2 Food Hygiene certificate.
1. Apprenticeship or on-the-job training
The quickest way in is to join a manufacturing or production employer as a trainee or process operative, often through an apprenticeship. You learn the filling and pouring equipment under an experienced operator and are signed off for independent work within weeks. No prior experience is required.
2. Short safety and handling courses
Short courses in health and safety, manual handling and COSHH (control of substances hazardous to health) run from a few days to a few weeks. They give you the basics employers look for and, where you handle food or drink, a Level 2 Food Hygiene certificate is the relevant qualification.
3. Vocational qualification (NVQ/BTEC)
An NVQ or BTEC in process or manufacturing operations, taken at an FE college or with a training provider, gives a recognised qualification and deeper grounding in equipment, quality control and industrial safety. It takes longer than on-the-job training but supports progression to higher-grade roles.
