How to become a installer

You can become a fitter quickly — no degree is required. The fastest route is a short course or learning on the job; many firms train beginners on site. If the work involves electrical installations you'll also need the relevant qualifications — for example an NVQ Level 3 and the 18th Edition (BS 7671) — plus a CSCS or ECS card for site access.

1. Short course

A short course of a few weeks to a few months gives the basic installation and assembly skills needed to start as a fitter. For electrical work you'll also need the relevant NVQ and an ECS card.

2. College or apprenticeship

An FE college diploma or an apprenticeship leading to an NVQ Level 2/3 trains fitters more thoroughly, combining theory, practice and a recognised qualification. It takes longer than a course but gives a broader base.

3. Trainee with no experience

Many firms take on trainee fitters with no experience and train them on site under experienced staff. It's a quick way to gain practical skills; for electrical work you'll obtain the required qualifications and ECS card alongside.
