How to become a mechanic

Motor mechanic is a recognised vocational trade in the UK and you don't need a degree - practical diagnostic and repair skill is what counts. The standard route is a 3-year apprenticeship combining FE college and garage work, leading to a Level 3 qualification (IMI/City & Guilds). Modern programmes increasingly cover hybrid and electric vehicles, and high-voltage certification is now expected by most workshops.

1. Apprenticeship

The standard UK route: a 3-year motor-vehicle apprenticeship split between an FE college and a garage or dealership. You earn an apprentice wage from day one and finish with a recognised Level 3 qualification, plus initial diagnostic and high-voltage training.

2. Adult retraining course

For career changers: shortened college courses that recognise prior workshop experience and combine theory with practice. Enough to start work and keep improving on the job, leading to the same recognised qualification.

3. EV / hybrid specialist certification

On top of the apprenticeship: short IMI courses (1-4 weeks) in electric-vehicle high-voltage safety and systems. Increasingly required for any garage that wants to service modern hybrids and EVs, and they command higher pay.

Bet on the EV transition: IMI high-voltage/electric-vehicle certification and software-diagnostics skills now command higher rates than combustion-only experience. Treat them as ongoing additions to your apprenticeship and Level 3 qualification.
