How to become a orthopedist

Becoming an orthopaedic surgeon is a regulated medical career with no shortcut. You must complete a medical degree, register with the General Medical Council (GMC) and finish foundation training, then specialty training in trauma and orthopaedic surgery before you can practise independently.

1. Medical degree and GMC registration

A medical degree (typically 5–6 years at a UK university) is the compulsory foundation. On graduating you register with the General Medical Council, then specialise in trauma and orthopaedics. Including specialty training, the full path takes roughly 12–15 years.

2. Continuing professional development

Short courses and fellowships in orthopaedics are CPD for already-qualified doctors — new techniques, joint replacement, arthroscopy. They cannot make you an orthopaedic surgeon from scratch; they supplement formal training.

3. Foundation and specialty training

After the degree, doctors complete the two-year Foundation Programme, then core surgical and specialty training in trauma and orthopaedics, treating patients under supervision. This is a compulsory stage before independent practice.

The only legitimate route is a medical degree, GMC registration, the two-year Foundation Programme, then core and specialty surgical training in trauma and orthopaedics — around a decade in total. No short course replaces this, and you must be on the GMC specialist register to work as a consultant.
