How to become a radio technician
You can become a radio mechanic without a university degree — a college course or training in electronics is enough. The fastest route is a short electronics or radio-repair course. For any mains-powered work you'll need to follow electrical safety regulations (BS 7671).
1. FE College or BTEC in Electronics
A BTEC or City & Guilds qualification in electronic engineering at an FE college gives a solid grounding in electronics, fault-finding and the repair of equipment. It takes longer than a short course but is a recognised foundation you can build a career on.
2. Short Electronics Courses
Short courses in electronics and radio-equipment repair are the quickest way in, typically lasting from a few weeks to a few months. They combine theory with hands-on practice in soldering, testing and fault-finding so you can start work sooner.
3. Apprenticeship
An engineering or electronics apprenticeship with an employer lets you earn while you learn, working alongside experienced technicians. You gain real repair experience on the job and a nationally recognised qualification at the end.
