Work schedule and conditions

A radiologist typically works 8-10 hours a day. The work schedule can be from Monday to Friday, with weekends off on Saturday and Sunday. There is a possibility of working in shifts. How to become a radiologist

Radiology is medicine, so there's no shortcut: it requires a full medical degree at a UK university, GMC registration, and several years of postgraduate specialty training in clinical radiology. Deep knowledge of anatomy, physiology and imaging technology is essential.

1. Medical degree

Complete a five- to six-year medical degree at a UK university, then provisional GMC registration. This is the mandatory foundation and there is no way around it.

2. Foundation and specialty training

After graduating, doctors complete the two-year Foundation Programme, gain full GMC registration, then enter specialty training in clinical radiology, where they learn to interpret images and plan treatment under supervision.

3. GMC registration and CCT

Registration with the General Medical Council is required to practise, and a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in radiology confirms you are qualified to work independently. Short courses cannot replace this.

The only route is a medical degree, GMC registration, the Foundation Programme and specialty training in radiology. Short courses add knowledge of equipment and techniques but do not give the right to diagnose. This is a profession with no fast track.
