How to become a radiologist

A radiologist is a medical doctor who interprets medical images such as X-rays, CT and MRI scans to diagnose disease — so there is no shortcut. In the UK you must complete a medical degree, register with the General Medical Council (GMC), and then specialise in clinical radiology through structured training.

1. Medical degree and GMC registration

The only route is a medical degree from a UK medical school, followed by registration with the General Medical Council and the two-year Foundation Programme. This gives the clinical grounding required before any specialty training.

2. Specialty training in clinical radiology

After foundation training, you apply for clinical radiology specialty training, working in the NHS while sitting the Royal College of Radiologists (FRCR) examinations. Completing this leads to a CCT and entry on the GMC Specialist Register.

There is no fast route: clinical radiology requires a medical degree, GMC registration, foundation training and several years of specialty training with the Royal College of Radiologists. Note that a radiographer — who operates the imaging equipment and registers with the HCPC — is a separate, quicker career.
