How to become a electrician
Becoming an electrician in the UK is a regulated trade, so the route runs through accredited vocational training rather than a university degree. The fastest standard path is an installation electrician apprenticeship: paid on-the-job work alongside college, leading to an NVQ Level 3 and an ECS card. To certify your own installations you'll also need the 18th Edition (BS 7671) qualification.
1. Apprenticeship
The standard and fastest route: a 3-4 year installation/maintenance electrician apprenticeship with an employer, combining paid work with day-release at an FE college. You finish with an NVQ Level 3, the AM2 assessment and an ECS card that lets you work on the tools.
2. Adult retraining / FE college route
For career changers: an FE college Level 2-3 diploma in electrical installation, often combined with an experienced-worker assessment to gain the NVQ Level 3. Add the 18th Edition (BS 7671) and inspection-and-testing certificates to work independently and self-certify through a competent-person scheme.
3. Higher technical qualification
Useful for moving from installation work into design, building services or running your own contracting business. An HNC/HND or degree in electrical engineering adds 1-3 years on top of the trade qualification and unlocks engineering and supervisor roles.
Treat the qualifications as the real goal: the NVQ Level 3, the 18th Edition and registration with a competent-person scheme determine whether you can sign off installations and run your own business. The apprenticeship is the quickest route there, and you earn while you learn.
