The standard route is a UK degree in maths, statistics or a related field — and for senior research or official statistics roles it's usually required. A faster way into adjacent analyst roles is a data-analysis course and learning the core tools (Excel, SQL, Python, Power BI).

1. Data analysis courses or bootcamp

The fastest start: a data-analysis course or bootcamp teaches you to work with Excel, SQL, Python and Power BI and to build a portfolio. It's ideal for entering analyst roles, though deeper statistical work calls for further maths.

2. Degree apprenticeship

A data analyst or data scientist degree apprenticeship lets you earn while studying with an employer and gain a recognised qualification with no tuition debt. It combines academic theory with real on-the-job analytics experience.

3. University degree

The main route into the profession is a UK degree in maths, statistics, economics or data science. University gives a deep grounding in probability, sampling and statistical methods — needed for research, government and analytics roles.

4. Internship or placement

An internship or placement in a company's analytics team — or with a body such as the Office for National Statistics — gives hands-on experience of collecting and processing data. It's a great way to apply theory and take your first career steps.
