How to become a cytologist

A cytologist studies cells and supports disease diagnosis, so in the UK this means a relevant biomedical or life-sciences degree — there's no shortcut. The standard NHS route is to qualify as a biomedical scientist and register with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Accredited laboratory training is part of the path.

1. University degree

2. Laboratory training
