How to become a surveyor
You can become a measuring surveyor quickly without a university degree. The job is taking precise measurements of windows, furniture, kitchens, rooms or sites so items can be made or fitted. Most people learn on the job; no licence is needed for ordinary measuring work, though certified land or geomatics surveying is a separate, regulated path.
1. On-the-job training
The quickest route is training directly with a company that makes windows, furniture or kitchens. A newcomer masters measuring tools, taking accurate dimensions and preparing orders within a few weeks of practice.
2. Short courses
Short courses cover the basics of technical measurement, reading drawings and using measuring instruments. This is a handy option for those who want to prepare before applying for work.
3. Relevant college course or apprenticeship
A BTEC or apprenticeship in construction or surveying is an advantage but not essential. For certified land or geomatics surveying you would instead need a relevant qualification, with chartered status through RICS.
