How to become a electrician

Becoming an electrician in the UK runs through accredited vocational training rather than a university degree. The standard route is an apprenticeship: 3-4 years combining college theory with paid on-the-job work, leading to an NVQ Level 3 in Electrotechnical (Installation). You'll also need the 18th Edition wiring regulations qualification, and an ECS card to work on site.

1. Apprenticeship

The standard UK route: 3-4 years split between an FE college and a sponsoring employer. You earn an apprentice wage from day one and finish with the NVQ Level 3 and 18th Edition qualifications needed to work on installations, plus your ECS card.

2. Adult retraining course

For career changers: shortened tracks that combine classroom theory with on-site experience, leading to the same NVQ Level 3 and 18th Edition qualifications. Often part-funded for adults; an experienced-worker (mature candidate) assessment route is also available.

3. Higher technical qualification

An HNC/HND or degree in electrical engineering helps you move from installation work into design, automation or running your own contracting business. It adds 1-3 years and unlocks engineering and supervisory roles.

Take the apprenticeship route and treat the NVQ Level 3 plus 18th Edition as the real goal - together with your ECS card they determine whether you can work unsupervised and certify installations.
